Anne Provoosts first book is called My Aunt is a Pilot Whale. It is translated in German, English, Danish, Swedish, Polish and Portuguese.

In 1994 she publishes Falling. The book was awarded three prizes within 10 days, in Flanders as well as in the Netherlands. After this came the Dutch Zilveren Griffel (The Silver Pencil) and the award of the Flemish Provinces. Falling is set in France, during a summer holiday. The teenager Lucas becomes more and more involved in his grandfather's wartime past, the topical atmosphere of xenophobia and his own obscure relationship with Caitlin, his old flame. The book is translated in 11 languages. Falling was made into an English spoken feature film in 2001, starring Jill Clayburgh (YouTube trailer).

Her third novel was published by Querido Publishers in Amsterdam in 1997: De roos en het zwijn (The Rose and the Swine). It recounts the story of The Beauty and the Beast. Provoost transforms the story into a saga of guilt and penance, mercy and justice. The reader is given accounts of battles between angels and elves, travel with mirrors, and embracing 'double people'.

In the Shadow of the Ark was published September 2001 at Querido Publishing House. It recounts the story of Noah and the ark, seen from the perspective of a teenage girl who was not 'chosen' to be on the ship. The novel received The Golden Kiss, the main award for young adult literature in The Netherlands and Belgium. The German version of the book received a special mention by the magazine Eselsohr. The Swedish translation came out in 2003. In 2004, the American, Australian and British version were published. In the Shadow of the Ark was became an audiobook at Blackstone Audio. In 2006, the novel was longlisted for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.

Provoost also writes essays on literature and on literature for children. So here's the Bad News. The Child as Antagonist is her most recent essay. In February 2008 her essay on atheism will by published at Querido.

Her new book Looking into the Sun is the story of a young girl living on a farm in Australia. Her mother has bad eyesight and knows she may be going blind. She thinks this is main problem in her life, but then the father falls from his horse and dies. The mother tries to save the farm, but she gradually looses control.
